Bush’s Impact: A First Things Debate

Joseph Bottum versus Michael Novak. Jody leads off with "no branch of conservatism has prospered much under Bush, particularly since the beginning of the Iraq War." Novak's defense is pretty tepid stuff, before concluding with the claim that "George Bush has proved himself a brave and determined man who has staked his presidency on getting democratic momentum underway in the Middle East." I yield to no one in my admiration for Novak, but on this occasion: game, set, and match to Bottum.

Bravery is actually serving in Iraq, not sending other people to serve there.  GWB may well be determined, but when he’s determined in pursuit of an idiot policy, that’s not good for the country or the party.  I suppose he has staked his presidency on getting democratic momentum underway in the Middle East, and we can all see how well that’s turned out.

My own view is that GWB has almost single handedly destroyed the reputation the Republicans have built up since 1964 as a party that cares about fiscal responsibility, has a due regard for federalism, and believes in limited government.
