Chicago ‘68 Redux

Politico:

A coalition of anti-war groups is vowing to protest this summer’s Democratic National Convention in Denver under the rubric “Re-create ’68,” prompting criticism from some on the left who are loath to revisit what they see as a disastrous time for both the anti-war movement and the Democratic Party.

Oh goodie. The DNC’s 1968 convention in Chicago was such a disaster that it gave us Richard Nixon, which might have been okay but for that whole Watergate unpleasantness, which gave us Jimmy Carter, which was a disatrous period of malaise, but gave us Ronald Reagan, which was the 8 best years of my political life (and personal, come to think of it). In any case, this only confirms my general sense that much of the older left suffers from Woodstock nostalgia, while the younger left suffers from hippie envy.

Yeah - there was nothing else going on in ‘68 that could explain Nixon.

Sheesh.  Facile political analysis is all the right has left these days, isn’t it?  That and Reagan nostalgia.

No, stupid hippies is a pretty good explanation.

In any case, this only confirms my general sense that much of the older right suffers from Reagan nostalgia, while the younger right suffers from hippie hatred.

The radical of one century is the conservative of the next.  The radical invents the views.  When he has worn them out the conservative adopts them.
