Final Round of My Personal Presidential Elimination Process: Rudy or Fred?

In my process of trying to decide which GOP Presidential candidate to support in 2008, I’ve already eliminated John McCain and Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul. So now it’s a choice between Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. So let’s go to the issues:

Abortion

Thompson: Pro-life excaim
Giuliani: Pro-choice

Budget and Economy

Thompson: Club for Growth calls his record “impressive” excaim
Giuliani: Club for Growth says his mixed record is okay given the liberal constituency in NYC

Tort reform

Giuliani: Club calls his record “mixed”
Thompson: Leave it to the states question

Education

Thompson: Voted for No Child Left Behind, but supports vouchers and school choice
Giuliani: Pro vouchers and choice excaim

Death Penalty and Crime

Thompson: Pro-death penalty
Giuliani: Pro-death penalty, gets edge for cleaning up NYC and response to 9/11 (minus points for constantly talking about 9/11) excaim

Immigration

Thompson: Can’t round up 12M illegals, so focus on preventing next 12M excaim
Giuliani: NYC not “sanctuary” but did welcome illegals

Iraq

Thompson: Stabilizing Iraq, and not leaving, is the right policy
Giuliani: Take on nation-building in Iraq, to reduce US terrorism risk question

On balance, I lean towards Thompson. In addition, I’m troubled by the fact that my fellow Catholic Rudy is out of step with the Church on key issues like abortion and the death penalty. Rudy’s also got that oft-mentioned authoritarian streak that spooks me.

To confirm the impression developed from my ad hoc eyeballing of issues I care about, I took the Votematch quiz. Thompson ranked well above Giuliani based on my preferences. On the Selectsmart Presidential selector, Thompson again finished considerably higher than Giuliani.

So I come back to where I was all the way back in May 2005, when I wrote that:

On the issues I care about (life, taxes, defense, business, etc.), Thompson was very solid, as this analysis of his Senate voting record shows. His lifetime ACU ranking was very commendable 86. His lifetime ADA rating was a highly commendable 5! Draft Fred in ‘08!

I must admit that I haven’t been very enthusiastic about Fred’s performance. He needs to step it up. All things considered, however, he’s the only GOP candidate for whom I find myself able to generate any affirmative fervor. If he weren’t in the race, I’d be looking for the lesser of the numerous evils running.

I like Fred!

Maybe, a grass roots movement would help him.  Otherwise, he isn’t generating any ‘heat.’

My wife goes nuts about his ‘young’ wife.  He may have problems with highly conservative women (emotions rule) voters.

The only thing that concerns me is Thompson’s stance on McCain/Feingold and if that has changed, since last I heard he had voted in favor of it.  Any info out there?

I like Huck a bit more than Fred, but actually all of the Reps more than all of the Dems, even Ron Paul (his silliest stuff wouldn’t ever be close to causing any damage—his non-intervention is a serious alternative to half-backed support for internationalism).

What if Fred becomes the Reps majority’s “second choice”, but no first choice is close to any majority?  Josh Marshall writes:
“McCain had a pretty poor night tonight, coming in fourth behind the comatose Fred Thompson” but thinks after Huckabee weakens Romney, and McCain takes him out in NH, McCain will be the default last man standing.  (He lost already so long ago, he’s now making a comeback!)

I think Fred avoiding being Front Runner isn’t so bad, but he needs better speeches to go with his solid policy.  Huck needs better policy to go with superior (radio / preacher practiced) delivery.

I like Fred Thompson too, and I’m not going to make any attempt to persuade you to support any particular candidate, but Giuliani has one large plus that you didn’t mention. That is his record of being able to get bureaucracies to do things that they didn’t want to do. This is major. it’s not one of George W. Bush’s abilities, and Romney’s private-sector management record is only partly applicable.

This isn’t really about anything, but one of the Amazon ads appearing in the sidebar touts Thompson Nutritional Gluco-Pro 900 - 120 Tablets. LOL.

Professor,

I generally completely agree with your take on the Republican candidates.

However, I’m very disappointed that your post above misses the critical topic that really makes Giuliani an impossible choice for me and that makes Fred Thompson the overall best choice among Republicans--support for separation of powers and federalism.

In Giuliani’s world, there’s no issue too trivial to deal with at the federal level, and there’s no power that should not be ultimately be ceded to the Executive branch.

FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.

During my time in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst, I served under both Presidents Carter and Reagan (as my commanders in chief). Without argument, President Reagan was the best commander-in-chief a military person could ever have served under. Fred Thompson possesses the same qualities and vision as President Reagan in that he is strong on national defense and sees a dire need to secure our borders and control immigration.

I can think of no better person to lead this country and fix the problems we have. He is the only candidate from either party who has specific and detailed plans on border security and immigration reform; revitalization of America’s armed forces; saving and protecting Social Security; and tax relief and economic growth. These are detailed on his Web site at http://www.fred08.com . I challenge you to find any other candidate who has laid out specific plans to fix anything.

Fred Thompson has published his first principles, some of which are mentioned above. In addition to those, he strongly believes in individual liberty, personal responsibility, limited government, federalism, traditional American values, the rule of law and is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment — all concepts established during the birth of our country and documented in our Constitution.

Again, try to find any candidate who has laid out their plans to “fix” this country. You will find they all speak in vague and abstract terms on their plans.

For those who have heard Fred Thompson speak, you will usually hear him say that the Fred Thompson you see today is the same Fred Thompson you saw yesterday and is the same Fred Thompson you will see tomorrow. He stands by his principles and values and doesn’t shift his positions based on polls or public opinion; in other words, he doesn’t say what the voters want to hear just to get elected, but remains steadfast on his views and convictions.

During his time in the Senate he focused on three areas: to lower taxes, strengthen national security and expose waste in the federal government. Fred Thompson has foreign policy experience, having served as member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Senate Intelligence committees.

As chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, he opened the investigation in 1997 on the Chinese government’s attempt to influence American policies and elections, and this investigation identified connections with the Clinton administration (documented in the committee’s report).

As a member of the Finance Committee, he worked tirelessly to enact three major tax-cut bills. Fred Thompson remains steadfast and even though a person may not agree with all his views and he understands some may disagree with him, you can count on him to be consistent and unwavering.

Don’t be fooled by his laid back approach and what critics call his “laziness.” As a former assistant U.S. attorney, he earned a reputation as a tough prosecutor and he possesses the toughness this country needs in order to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s issues.

I ask that you take a hard look at what this country needs, then take a hard look at all the other candidates’ views, policies, their records and their track record on consistency. Fred Thompson possesses integrity, loyalty, commitment, energy and decisiveness, all traits of an effective leader, and will emerge as the best person to take this country boldly forward.

Please help Fred win in South Carolina:
