It ended up being a split decision football weekend. As regular readers know, my two favorite college teams are UCLA and whoever’s playing USC and my two favorite pro teams are Washington and whoever is playing Dallas. They collectively ended up 2-2.
Jerry Jones has sold his soul to Satan. It’s the only possible explanation for tonight’s Dallas-Buffalo game. Tony Romo serves up 5 interceptions, two returned for TDs, and a lost fumble ... and the Bills still manage to lose.
In other football news, what’s up with the revival of the direct snap? My beloved Redskins (3-1, BTW) ran it three times against Detroit. (I don’t remember which formation(s) they ran it out of. Was it a Triple Wing? Or a Shotgun?) For the first time since September 10, 1991 (when they ran one out of a punt formation in beating the Cowboys). And, as USA Today reports, it’s becoming almost passe in the collegiate ranks:
More and more teams are using a direct snap to someone other than quarterback — usually a speedy running back — in an effort to catch defenses off guard and get the ball into the hands of their best players as quickly as possible.
Maybe my Bruins ought to try it; anything’s bound to be better than giving the ball to our QBs.
