SI.com has learned that for the first time in history, a major presidential candidate may sponsor a race car in NASCAR’s premier series. According to sources, Barack Obama’s campaign is in talks to become the primary sponsor of BAM Racing’s No. 49 Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race on August 3. Details of the agreement are expected to be worked out over the coming days. ...
Racing sources claim one of the options being considered would allow individual campaign donors to get their name on the race car for as little as $100. Obama will also be present for a second private fundraiser on July 30 in Miami, in which team owners Beth Ann and Tony Morgenthau—staunch Republicans—will give the Democrat an opportunity to spread his message of change. Randy Moss and Fergie are among the celebrities confirmed to be a part of that fundraiser in support of the candidate and his venture into NASCAR.
This may or may not prove a politically smart move. My guess is that it will be seen as phony. Obama’s too much a wine and brie guy to go down with the Bud and exhaust crowd. Yet, it shows what an amazing fundraising machine Obama has built. He’s not only got the money to pull of a stunt like this, but he’ll probably come out of it having raised even more money.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see what the Red State Update guys do with this one.
Why not start with a Bass Masters boat Barack and work your way up to NASCAR?
He’s not a hoity-toity “wine and brie” guy—I think he’d be a lot more at-home on a city basketball court than G.W. Bush, for instance.
But Obama may not be a NASCAR guy either. The key thing is whether this sends a message of respect, affection, and interest to NASCAR fans. Mark Warner wasn’t a NASCAR guy either (instead, he was a brilliant businessman with a personal style closer to Mitt Romney.) But his sponsorship of a Nascar car was widely seen as a good move that allowed him to diminish the traditional Republican advantage in southern and western Virginia.

It does seem kind of phony. Were I Obama, I would try to present this not as Obama trying to prove that he actually is a NASCAR-type himself, but rather as Obama trying to reach out to a certain demographic.
