Powerline, Bill, Hillary, and the Levers of Power

Powerline blasts Bill Clinton for criticizing George Bush. They've got a point about decorum on the part of former Presidents, sort of, but make it in such a hyperbolic fashion that they lose a lot of credibility. (E.g., "Democrats appear bent on destroying every element of the fabric that has united us as Americans." That's more than just a little over the top, wouldn't you say?)

But that's neither here nor there. Instead, I wanted to comment on this statement:

Clinton's vicious attack is even worse in the context of his wife's Presidential bid: it is fair to assume that he was motivated not only by partisanship, but by his own desire to re-occupy the White House, and, most likely, wield once more the levers of power.

Maybe they're right. Maybe Bill Clinton really does want to "wield once more the levers of power." But does anybody really believe that Hillary would let Bill anywhere near those levers if she gets elected President? My guess is that Hillary's attitude towards those levers would differ but little from that of NRA members towards their guns. You know what I mean, of course; the line about "cold dead hand."

Observations from someone who does not support Hillary.

If Bill intends to help Hillary in 2008 by attacking Bush in 2005 it is a mistake.

Is is three years until the election. By then no one will go out and vote for Hillary because Bill spoke against Bush. Attacking any man who is leaving after eight tough years will just appear mean.

Partisan attacks squander Bill’s great assets; he is a tremendous speaker, organizer, and campaigner. He can help Hillary tremendously in devising a positive message. He should avoid any hint of pettiness.

If I’m not right, in your attempts to put down Clinton you are actually missing what appears to be a significant shift by Bill Clinton.

Until now both Clintons have strongly supported the war.

Is this a significant shift by the two to start opposing the war?

It is very unseemy though.  The tradition of not filabustering judges has gone by the wayside.  Past Presidents being publicly critical of a sitting President has now gone by the wayside.  Letting the legislature make laws and not the judiciary has gone by the wayside.  I notice a pattern....
