“Hope, my friends, is a powerful thing,” McCain said, “I have seen men’s hopes tested in hard and cruel ways that few will ever experience.”
He went on: “To encourage a country with only rhetoric rather than sound and proven ideas that trust in the strength and courage of free people is not a promise of hope. It is a platitude.”
Apropos of which, Megan McArdle observes of Obama:
I’m watching his speech now, and it’s inspiring. But it’s also saddening, because deep down, I don’t believe that Obama is going to change Washington, eliminate lobbying, etc. I wish he wouldn’t tell me things that I can’t possibly believe--and moreover that I can’t really understand anyone believing. He might be the best president; he might even make Washington work a little better, though I kind of doubt it. But he isn’t going to transform American politics in the utopian way his speech implies. No one who has dried out behind the ears could reasonably believe that he has this power. So why is he saying he does?
It’s Obama feeding into the messianic cult that seems to be growing around him. If I’m right about that, his adherents will prove difficult to persuade by reasoned argument. They seem to really give to Obama’s promises the same sort of religious assent that I, as a Catholic, am supposed to give to Church teachings that seem hard to swallow (like the Assumption of Mary).
The system of separation of powers that prevents a President from doing things we want done is the same system that prevents a President from doing things we don’t want done.
You take the good with the bad and accept that electing a great President isn’t going to usher in Paradise and that electing a lousy President isn’t going to end the Republic. Life goes on, either way.
They seem to really give to Obama’s promises the same sort of religious assent that I, as a Catholic, am supposed to give to Church teachings that seem hard to swallow (like the Assumption of Mary).
OK, you are cynical about the church you profess to believe, so why would anyone be surprised to learn you were cynical about everything else?
Cynicism never built anything. Cynicism never saved anyone. People are sick of it. It doesn’t matter, really, to most people whether or not Obama can deliver on most - or ANY - of his promises. What the public wants is NOT SOMEONE WHO SOUNDS LIKE YOU. Folks who sound like you are a dime a thousand, if that. They’re literally everywhere you look, and as leaders, they’re utterly worthless. Someone with the courage to believe, even if he’s wrong (and Obama WILL be wrong) is one in a million.
You need not worry about a cult forming around you anytime soon, perfessor. Who would you inspire? Who would believe in you?
I liked Obama in the beginning. The more I hear him, the less I like his speeches. They are full of empty promises, he talks about America as we are a third-world country. I don’t hear him talking about the greatness of this country.
Without he prepared speeches, I don’t see him scoring much!
It’d be easy to see how an Obama presidency goes south. The Move-On crowd becomes dienchanted with him as he doesn’t pull all troops out of Iraq on day 1, and doesn’t create a socialist healthcare system overnight. Conservative and moderate supporters will fall away as a series of leftist actions is taken with the support of a Democratic congress. Taxes will be raised, spending will be raised. The world will continue to hate America.
This will hopefully force a coherent conservative response. Perhaps a new generation of conservative leaders - and please, not from the South, enough - to regain confidence.
Yesterday in Wisconisn Obama appeared at a General Motors plant to tell the workers what he would do to protect their jobs.
Nine months ago he appeared at the Detroit Economic Club and made it clear the continuing existence of the Big 3 was a detriment to the environment.
Hillary is also now appearing at GM plants and promising to save Big 3 jobs.
Both (and Romney) are either ignorant, pandering or lying. Ecvironmental costs will eventually force the Big 3 to move all manufacturing offshore, it is just a matter of time.

C’mon prof, give us a break. When Reagan got up up and spewed unctuous bullshit, he was the Great Communicator. Now a guy from the other side who can talk is “feeding into a messianic cult(?)” Do you think any normal thinking person believes that?
