Clearly, talent was not a dispositive factor. After all, any list of great rock guitarists that doesn't have Eric Clapton somewhere in the top three is immediately suspect. Conversely, if manic playing is the chief desideratum, where is Pete Townshend?
I’m flabbergasted farther down the list, too; Tony Iommi? Eddie Van Halen? JAMES HETFIELD? These low-talent, low-attention-to-detail maroons don’t belong on the same list as His Divinity James Marshall Hendrix, or for that matter several obvious omissions—Mark Knopfler, Richard Thompson, Eric Clapton, Martin Barre, and Steve Howe, to name the most obvious omissions.
Rule of thumb: If they can’t be bothered to keep their bloody instruments in tune ON STUDIO ALBUMS, they don’t belong on anybody’s list of “greats"… except, perhaps, former students of Harold Hill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056262/). Or, maybe—just maybe—my ire comes because I don’t know the territory.
Also omitted is guitarist Joe Satrianni. He’d be in the top 10 surely!
Clearly, any list that omits Nigel Tufnel as one of the greatest and wildest gituar players of all time is simply scandalous.
They weren’t talking about best guitarists, they were talking about wildest ones, right? In that case, where the hell is Jerry Garcia on that list?

Professor, I’m completely with you on both Clapton and Townshend. Technique-wise, Pete wasn’t the greatest player, but he was second no one in his creativity.
Also, why does this poll only mention lead guitar players? Does anybody dispute that Entwistle was among the 2 or 3 best bass guitar players in rock?
At least Yngve Malmsteen did not make the list, thank goodness.
