Workaholic Lawyers

I've occasionally blogged about the ever-increasing workload of top lawyers, much of which is self-imposed. But this is ridiculous:

According to this WaPo story, Libby defense lawyer Alexandra Walsh of Baker Botts gave birth to her third child last Friday. One of Washingtonian magazine’s 2006 “40 Top Lawyers Under 40,” Walsh was reportedly BlackBerrying about work matters a little more than an hour after giving birth.

I’m sure Walsh’s offspring will have a wonderful relationship . . ., with their nanny.

With their mother, not so much.

PB REPLIES: Let’s not assume. The reports supports an inference that she’s a serious workaholic, but we know nothing about her parenting skills.

Ridiculous?  How about indifference to her children?  Would you want to grow up with a mother who puts work ahead of bonding?  Not me.

I worked those kinds of hours for much of my career, starting as a software engineer and up through senior executive in early and mid-stage technology companies.  My workload didn’t change much as an MBA from the time I was a techie.  It’s not unique to lawyers by any means.

I have to wonder if any of the initial commenters would be in such a snit if a father were to work similarly long hours.  Somehow, I doubt it.
