A Clear Choice

Belief.net’s Steven Waldman on McCain/Palin:

After a year’s worth of stories about whether the religious right was “dead,” they now seem to be flexing great muscle, helping to bring about the most antiabortion ticket running on the most antiabortion platform - ever.

Maybe. Of course, on the other side we have Obama/Biden running on a platform many pro-abortion rights advocates are calling the most pro-abortion rights in decades. As one explained:

… the Platform comes very close to embracing the full reproductive health agenda that has been consistently advocated by the pro-choice, progressive women’s movement.

If the executive branch could actually do something for or against abortion, this issue might be relevant here.

Joel - Do you mean like appointing Supreme Court justices?

What will happen if Roe v Wade falls?  Why, let me tell you.  Within one week the legislatures of 47 or 48 states will act with lightning speed to legalize abortion in their own jurisdictions.  The exceptions will be Alabama (maybe), Mississippi (maybe), and Utah (for sure).

Two weeks after that, the little town of West Wendover, NV, (on the Utah state line) will see a brand new abortion clinic open, which will do a thriving business servicing all those nice Mormon girls whose parents don’t want the neighbors to know they got pregnant.

Anyone who wants an abortion will still be able to get one.  Tell me again why the abortion issue matters at the federal level?

Joel, explain to me what will keep the next republican congress from simply banning abortion nationwide?

Fear of facing the voters.
