John Edwards Announces - Iraq and Foreign Policy
In his presidential bid announcement, John Edwards set out his Iraq policy, which can be briefly summarized as "cut and run":
... we need to make it clear that we intend to leave Iraq and turn over the responsibility of Iraq to the Iraqi people. The best way to make that clear is to actually start leaving, which is why I've said we ought to be taking 40,000 to 50,000 troops out now, and that ought to continue over time.
The arguments against the cut and run policy are well-known, and have been rehearsed bith here and elsewhere. As I wrote in a column for the Examiner:

Staying the course or escalating our war with Iraq will do no “good” other than killing a lot more Iraqis and more American troops. The Al Quada influence is to be sure tiny. Sure, we can’t be defeated but we can’t win either. We don’t have to exit Iraq like we did in Lebanon, Vietnam or Somalia; we can exit over time giving maximum support to the Iraqi government (even though the government there there is largely a fiction.)
Do you really think staying the course in Iraq will boost Army morale and prestige?
