The NY Times’ War Against John McCain

The NY Times apparently has decided to go to war with John McCain. First, they publish a bogus story implying McCain cheated on his wife and sold political favors for sex.  Next they have their new beat reporter drag up the old stories about McCain’s alleged VP flirtation with John Kerry. They just happen to decide that a 2000 Maureen Dowd column accusing McCain of “self-pity and negative attacks” was ripe for recycling in their op-ed “classics” series. Now, they’ve turned loose their medical reporter to drag up McCain’s 8 year old cancer surgery, despite the absence of any evidence that McCain has any health issues.

The Times has taken the gloves off and is digging deep for mud to sling. Ironically, of course, McCain bashing by the Times at this point redounds to the Senator’s benefit. Lots of conservatives worried that McCain was too cozy with the liberal media. The Times is solving that problem for McCain. The people in the base who need to come around loathe the Times for its pretensions and biases. It’s the old “enemy of my enemy” story.

Even so, it’s damn shoddy journalism.

Reminds me of when the NYT went after the Clintons with an unsubstantiated story on their marriage here

Liberals.

Well, now that you’ve had this little hissyfit, why don’t you go back and actually read the article?  It’s written by a reporter who’s also a doctor and it states in no uncertain terms that his prognosis is good, especially given the fact that he’s gone seven years without a recurrence.  And it notes that the size of his scar is not indicative of the size of the melanoma removed there, which was small.

OK Im puzzled here? Its not legitimate to ask questions about the health of a 71 y/o guy about to assume the most powerful job in the world (I plan on voting for him and assume the Dems will find a way to lose)? Large corporations put their CEO’s through pretty rigorous physical exams so this seemed like a pretty legit thing to me unlike the “sex scandal”. I am doctor and several of my sibling had already asked me about his melanoma and wanted to know if he is really “cured”. I mostly just lurk here and appreciate the Prof’s postings but this seemed to be out of character.

Steve M.-

And Obama’s proposed bill stated in no uncertain terms that Senator McCain is, in fact, a citizen.

Perhaps next we’ll have a front page headline on how Senator McCain is not, in fact, a pedophile…

Next up: The Wall Street Journal Opinion Page War Against Obama, Clinton.

C’mon.

Does it all really matter?
Dick Morris just made the reference to McCain, (should Hillary stop Obama unethically)as being the Democrats perfectly acceptable alternative.

Picking on Morris won’t negate the accuracy of his observation.

The sad part is that for traditional Christian Conservatives, there is no acceptable alternative to go to. They can stay home or contribute to the undervote -neither of which will give them a party they can call home.

C’mon Rolly.  The professor is not complaining about the NYT editorial pages coming out against McCain.  He is pointing out the attacks on McCain in the news sections of the paper. A completely different matter.

McCain has a terrible reputation even among Republicans for his foul temper and impulsive decisions.  I hope that more media than just the NYT share this information with voters at large, rather than concealing it so that critics like the good Professor Bainbridge won’t accuse them of bias.

(That said, the implied-affair-w/-lobbyist story was a poor performance, which many liberal blogs were quick to point out.)

Oh Happy Day! We let you have the party for awhile… that didn’t work out so well, now did it?
